Obituary of John A. Hargleroad II

John A. “Jack” Hargleroad ll passed away peacefully on May 10, 2015 at his home. He was born April 8, 1922 at home on Lurgan Ave in Shippensburg, PA to Fred K. and Nellie Pague (Kanaga) Hargleroad. Jack attended public schools in Shippensburg, PA, graduating in 1940. In High School he played football, was class president, editor of the yearbook, associate editor of the school newspaper and played trombone in the band and orchestra. He was enrolled in the pre-med program at Gettysburg College and graduated in 1944 with an AB in Chemistry and Biology. He was a member of the Sigma Chi fraternity. In 1943 Jack enlisted in the US Naval Reserves as an apprentice seaman. He graduated from Temple University Medical School with an MD with honours in 1946 as a Commissioned Officer, LT jg USNR. On September 16, 1945, he married Helen Saby in Brua Chapel in Gettysburg. After internship at Harrisburg Hospital, Harrisburg, PA, Jack was on active duty with the Naval Hospital and 2nd Marine Corp for the US Navy at Camp LeJeune, North Carolina, where his daughter, Karen was born in 1948. In 1949 Jack opened a solo practice of medicine at 7 South Prince St., Shippensburg, PA. In Shippensburg, two more children were born, Janet in 1950 and John in 1951. In 1951, in addition to his medical practice, he took the part time job of doctor for Shippensburg State Teachers College. Jack was a General Practitioner and a country doctor who treated all ages, made house calls and assisted in surgery. He delivered over 2,000 babies at a maternity home, Chambersburg & Carlisle Hospitals, and at home. In Shippensburg he served on the board of the Tri County Heart Association (Cumberland, Perry, Dauphin), taught Sunday school and served on the Council of Memorial Lutheran Church. Jack was elected to the School Board and served as president of Rotary. He was a Freemason for over 75 years. He was a member of the American Academy of General Practice. In December 1964, Jack moved to State College, PA, and was a physician for Penn State University. In 1968, he became director of University Health Services at Penn State. Some of his activities in Centre County included secretary and president of the Centre County Medical Society, President of Central PA American Heart Association, and served as board members or officers of the Lung Association, United Way, Centre Community Hospital, Centre County Historical Society, and Centre Area Health Council. He taught Sunday school and was president of the Church Council of Grace Lutheran Church of State College. Jack was Boarded in Family Practice and had a faculty appointment in the College of Human Development and Medical School at Penn State. He was a member of the College Health Association and was elected Fellow. He was president of the Mid-Atlantic College Health Association and on retirement, an award was established in his name. In 1985, he retired from Penn State with the rank of Emeritus, Director of University Health Services. Jack was predeceased by his wife Helen, on May 19, 2012 after more than 66 years of marriage and his sister Pague Wise. He is survived by his three children, Karen Clautice and husband, Stephen, Janet Snyder and husband, Lee, John A. Hargleroad III and wife, Patti; five grandchildren, Thomas Snyder, Carrie Snyder (daughter Candice Townsend), Anne Hargleroad Vopal, and husband, George, Katherine Hargleroad and fiancé, Logan Seidler, Daniel Clautice and wife, Molly, Katherine Clautice Clawson and husband, Douglas; dear friend Virginia Walker; sister-in-law, Mary Saby; and many nieces and nephews. Memorial Services will be May 23, 2015 at 11:30 am at Foxdale Village Auditorium, 500 East Marylyn Ave., State College. Interment will be at Spring Hill Cemetery in Shippensburg on Sunday, May 24, 2015 at 11:00 am. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be directed to Foxdale Village, 500 East Marylyn Ave., State College, PA 16801 or Schlow Regional Library, 211 S. Allen St., State College, PA 16801.
