As activities for the 2016 AAUW State College Branch Used Book Sale reach a fever pitch, do know that Matt's presence at this year's sale will be missed. He did love the sale. As a former Penn State colleague of Matt's and an officer of the AAUW State College Branch, I found Matt's enthusiasm for the sale and his thrill at finding special finds during the sale both joyful and contagious. I'll think of him often during the upcoming and future sales!

My heart is heavy. I echo the sentiments of my friends and former colleagues at Penn State. Even under the strain of graduate school, Matt was great. Never an unkind word, never a hint of uneasiness, always happy to talk and laugh and connect. I will miss him, and I offer my condolences to his family.

I used to play poker with "Little Matt" (so called only because our group also had a "Big Matt"). Seeing him, which didn't happen too often, always made me smile. We hadn't talked in a long time - over a decade, I've just realized - but I'm still going to miss him terribly.

I cannot get Matt's face and his singular cadence, always a beautiful mix of calm and excited, out of my head since I heard the news. The mention of Iceland in the obituary made me smile given how many times I heard him speak of Reykjavik, as if a little motif repeated over and over, fantasy and relief in one. I was at Penn State from 2000-2005, and had the good fortune of being in Matt's company and sharing an office in the basement of Burrowes Building. So fond are my memories of Matt--there are also only sweet memories of relations others had with him, always in good company of gourmet sarcasts, and wistful ironists of political science. Matt uniquely shared so many close friendships with many and always remained a public figure in the department. How could someone so sweet and vital somehow not be around anymore, I don't understand. I am sending him a warm hug, and I wish I had seen his face in the past ten years. Deep condolences to all who were close to him as took his exception to this world. As unbearable news goes, this is way up there. Stay you, Roop--I still hear a friend call him that lovingly.

Rupert family,
My thoughts and prayers to all of the family. My memories of Matt are of him volunteering at the little, old Cooperstown Public Library when he was about 13 or 14 years old. He spent many a Sat. morning making signs for the library on his computer (the library didn't have one then) but Matt did!
How appropriate in designating Schlow Library as recipetent of memorials for Matt. I met Cathy Alloway at library workshops & I'm sure she will select very thoughtful memorials. Matt will always be remembered in "library-land".

I had the pleasure of meeting Matt during our time enrolled in the Penn State Emerging Leaders course in 2014. He was so kind and friendly and we had some fun conversations about his travels to participate in Scrabble tournaments, which I know he loved! Sending prayers and healing thoughts to his family. I am glad that I had a chance to know him for a short time.

I would like to express my deepest sympathy for the premature loss of your beloved son, brother, uncle, and partner. Although I lost track of Matt following his graduation from Rocky Grove High School, I have many fond memories of him as a student... intelligent and inquisitive, kind and caring, polite and respectful. I always knew he was destined to accomplish great things ~ after reading his obituary, it is obvious that he did. He touched many people's lives and truly made a difference.
Although he was taken from us much too soon, it is my sincere hope that your happy memories will some day bring you a small measure of comfort and peace. My thoughts, prayers, and deepest sympathy are with you now and in the difficult days that lie ahead.
Sincerely,
Rosalyn Miller
