Obituary of Arthur Shuman Beward

Arthur S. Beward, 97, quietly passed away January 2017 at Juniper Village, State College, PA. He is survived by Martha, his wife of 73 years, their five children; Tamsin Crissman (Frank), Arthur (Nancy), Debora, and Warren Beward, Eileen Thomas (Robert); and two grandchildren, Erin, and Michael Thomas; and two nephews, David (Odile), and Brian Duffman. Arthur was born in Mexico, PA, December 1919, the son of Lillian S. Beward (deceased). He grew up and completed public school in Lewistown. He graduated from Penn State University in 1942 with a chemistry degree, and entered the US Army Air Force as a 2nd Lieutenant. He earned the rank of Major in the USAF Reserves. He completed a master's degree in chemistry at Penn State in 1948. Arthur's professional contributions were in various areas of chemistry. For many years of his career, he was assistant editor for the American Society for Testing Materials. He authored 16 or more professional publications. Arthur most enjoyed time with his family. His photographic talents resulted in home movies and slides that sparked memories and laughter. He provided ample supplies and engaged his family to create art. He rode a bicycle almost daily into his 80's. When younger, he was the sole adult for many long bike rides with his own, and all the neighbors', children. He enthusiastically sang along to Frank Sinatra and other big band era music. He played the violin, trumpet, and organ. He could make or repair anything, and liked to take things apart to see how they worked. He had a lifetime interest in flying and, for a time, piloted his own private plane. He was a longtime member of St. Paul's United Methodist Church and taught teenagers in Sunday school. A memorial service will be held at Juniper Village in the Willows Dining Room on Friday, March 3, 2017 at 2:00 pm.
