Dear Fred and the Maurer family,
It was with great sorrow that Heidi and I learned of Nancy's passing. She was a special lady who I was privileged to have known for over 36 years. I first met "Nance" as a student learning to fly under Fred's tutelage. She welcomed a young college student into her first home in State College and smiled as Fred and I spent countless hours sitting around her kitchen table pouring over aeronautical charts and navigation materials.
Those were good times....I was happy to share a bit of Penn State college life with a young couple raising a family. The years have gone by quickly, but we always remained in touch through key events in both of our lives. Nancy's warmth and hospitality were always on display on the few precious occasions when I was able to return to State College. Her smile and rye sense of humor were evident when I would drag Fred out of a warm house to go watch a night football game in Beaver Stadium with pouring rain or when your dad would insist on going to a nearby lake (with snow on the ground) to race sail boats! I will always cherish those memories and time spent with your mom.
Nancy will be sorely missed. Please accept our deepest condolences. Heidi and I will be making a donation in her memory to Centre Wildlife Care.

Chris, Melissa,Callia, Leo, Fred, and all your family.
I am very very sorry for the loss of your wonderful mother grandmother, wife and best friend. Nancy was surely an inspiration to everyone she met as well as all of your family.
I have been reading all about her courage and love, and wonderful life of giving such special gifts of her time and talent to all of her family and community through scouting, love of animals, her efforts to fund family costs of higher education, and so many things she did for everyone in her life.
As someone who lost my own dear mother less than a year ago, I will always keep you and Nancy in my prayers. My mom was also a girl scout leader for many years in Altoona, before and after World War 2. It is such a wonderful gift to the lives of many young people and one that will impact them throughout their adults lives.
