Nancy Maurer

Obituary of Nancy L. Maurer

Nancy L. Maurer, 71, of State College, died at home Friday, February 2, 2018, after a yearlong battle with pancreatic cancer.

Born January 24, 1947 in New London, CT, she was the daughter of Everett Rogers Lamb Jr. and Helen Brannegan. She married Frederick John Maurer, on September 23, 1965 and together they shared over 52 years of marriage and a lifetime of love.

In addition to her husband she is survived by two children, Brenda Hartman and her husband Brad, of State College and Christopher Maurer and his wife Melissa, of State College; a sister, Virginia Lamb of Mystic, CT, and four grandchildren, Ryan and Lauren Hartman and Callia and Leo Maurer. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by a sister, Jane Perry.

Nancy grew up in Ledyard, CT and graduated from Norwich Free Academy in 1965. She worked at Animal Medical Hospital as a receptionist from 1991 until 2015. But, Nancy's first and forever career was her family. She was the high school sweetheart and best friend of her husband Fred, and an incredible mom and grandma. As a young military bride, she moved from Connecticut to Alabama, to Texas, and back to Alabama, making new friends at every stop. And, as the wife of a pilot, she moved from various apartments in Massachusetts to Pennsylvania. When they moved to State College in 1980 Nancy felt truly at home.

For over 40 years, she and Fred have enjoyed raising their children and spending time with their grandchildren. When her children were growing up, she was active in the Park Forest Elementary PTO, volunteered at the school library, and led both boy and girl scout troops. From cookie baking marathons at Christmas to Easter Egg hunts and lemon meringue pies, she made holidays and birthdays special. And when it came time for Brenda and Chris to go to college, she was determined they graduate debt free and worked as a receptionist at Animal Medical Hospital to make that happen. She loved the job because she loved animals, especially cats, and had great organizational skills. She continued to work there long after her children graduated. She was especially close with her sisters and managed to keep up with them through visits and almost daily phone calls. Nancy also treasured visiting with her many cousins, nieces and nephews at family gatherings and reuniting with classmates at NFA reunions.

Friends will be received on Saturday, February 17th at 12 p.m. followed by a 1 p.m. Memorial Service at Koch Funeral Home, 2401 S. Atherton St., State College, PA.
