Obituary of Tom Chesworth
E. Thomas "Tom" Chesworth, 81, of Boalsburg, passed away on Wednesday, September 20, 2018. He died in his home, surrounded by his loved ones.
Born in Belle Vernon, PA, he was the son of Edward T. and Gladys (Mountser) Chesworth. He is survived by the love of his life, Josephine (Rider) Chesworth, his wife of 59 years; his three children Cynthia Chesworth Adams (State College, PA), Michael D. Chesworth (and wife, Beth of Amherst, MA), and Jennifer Chesworth (Boalsburg, PA); his grandchildren Linden Keal (New Orleans, LA), Caitlin Adams (Brooklyn, NY), Sophie Chesworth (Stamford, CT), Aidan Chesworth (Amherst, MA), Erin Adams and a grand-daughter, Harper Drew Adams (Nazareth, PA); his sisters Henrietta Grosz (Yardley, PA) and Sarah Lunch (Ann Arbor, MI); numerous nieces and nephews; as well as dear friends who also loved "the practicing curmudgeon," as he called himself.
Tom was a three-time graduate of Penn State, with BS and MS degrees in Meteorology and a PhD in Physics. He was a registered Professional Engineer and technical expert for the National Institute of Standards and Technology and also for the United Nations Industrial Development Organization specializing in Electromagnetic Compatibility and Interference. Tom served as a technical consultant over the course of a long and distinguished career that took him around the world. The company he founded in 1979, Seven Mountains Scientific, designed and built electronic devices and laboratory instruments and performed electromagnetic compatibility engineering and analysis for a variety of clients. With the help of his wife Jo, the company also published three technical journals ENR (Electromagnetic News Report), ABT (Advanced Battery Technology) and the FCC Report.
Tom and his wife Jo were licensed wine judges and wrote a column on wine for the CDT for many years. They travelled the world together both professionally and on the many cruises they greatly enjoyed. Tom was also an enthusiastic ham radio operator, call number W3IA and formerly K3EXE that broadcasted as "et cetera, X et cetera."
