So sorry to hear about Dr. Romaine's passing. I met Pete when he and Don Walters started a tiny company in North Carolina called Agarigen, Inc. Our little band of scientists worked hard on his dream of converting mushrooms into a manufacturing platform for protein pharmaceuticals. We tried our best, and I think the progress that we achieved made him proud. Pete was always very kind and generous; his knowledge about mushrooms and his infectious humor and enthusiasm for science made this challenging work very fun. I always enjoyed his dead-pan jokes and his unique perspective on life. He was highly respected as a scientist, yet so down-to-earth as a person to interact with. He and his wife always made you feel welcome. Good people with good hearts. Rest in peace, Pete.

My deepest sympathies to the Romaine Family at this difficult time. I met Pete as an undergrad in the late 1990’s when I answered an ad for a glassware washer in his lab. I ended up working in his lab for two years as an undergrad and then staying on as a full time technician for a year after graduation. Pete was such a kind, encouraging boss. He was always so enthusiastic and had a great sense of humor. I learned so much from my time in his lab and am grateful for the lessons I learned about science and life.

It was with profound sadness that we learnt of Pete's passing yesterday. On behalf of the thousands of ISMS members around the world, we send our condolences to Carol and all the family.
Pete will be sorely missed by many in the global mushroom industry but we can find some solace in the word's of Dr Suess in his last book titled “Oh, the Places You’ll Go” in 1990, where he wrote “Don’t cry because it’s over. Smile because it happened!”
Pete Romaine was a special a guy! A great scientist, a great person, and terrific company. He will be remembered as the world's first MycoPharmer following his work at Penn State in his later years; and his contribution to 2004 ISMS Congress in Miami as Chair of the Scientific Committee, will never be forgotten.
Pete's contribution to mushroom science and education was significant. He was highly respected and well-liked everywhere he went. He was held in the highest esteem at ISMS.
Pete's was a life well-lived. May he rest in peace.

Dear Carol, and Romaine family,
My sincere condolences at this very difficult time. I am heartbroken to learn the news of Pete. He was a kind a generous mentor who allowed me to find my own way. All that I have accomplished after leaving Penn State traces back to Pete’s gentle mentoring in and outside of the lab.
Carol, I do wish to recall one of my fondest memories of an “Italian dinner” hosted at your home. I will wear red pants in memory of all the good times we had, and in celebration of a truly great person.
Much love to everyone,
Michael & family

My deepest condolence to Romaine family, and wish you all find peace and pursue good life as he wished. Pete will always be missed for his warm heart, wisdom of life, and great sense of humor. As long as we remember him, he will always be alive and surrounded by love.
I went to Pete's lab doing my PhD in 1995 and stayed there for 4 years, during which time I learnt life time lessons from him. Flying all the way from Beijing, knowing nothing about Penn State and my boss, I was so nervous and anxious. As soon as I landed, Pete gave me a warm welcome and made me laugh from the first minute. Every since then, because of his dedicated guidance and constant encouragement, I hardly ever had difficult time for my PhD journey. When I was upset about a bad mistake in experiment, he would say "You are still my best student." During my last year in State College, we worked together to develop a high efficient mushroom transformation system, which seemed impossible before. Pete was so excited and called me "Xi, can you believe it? It worked! What you have done is the best thing happened in my career." Pete was such a person that he always thought about others and was never shy of praising students.
Pete, you will always be remembered as young and energetic. You have a fun life and make people around you having a lot of fun.

My deepest condolences to the Romaine family. Pete was always one to offer encouragement, to help me see the value of science, to keep the big picture in mind. This was especially valuable to me when I was a new assistant prof - Pete was a valuable mentor. He will be missed.

My condolences to the Romaine family. It was always a highlight of going to visit Penn State and attending mushroom industry meetings to talk with Pete. He had a brilliant scientific mind and a wonderful sense of humor. It was always a pleasure to be around Pete. He is gone too soon. My deepest sympathy.

In memory of Dr Pete:
As a visiting scientist in early 90s, and 2000s. I learned a lot from prof. Romaine not only in professional knowledge, also how to become a scientist.
We will remember you forever.
