Obituary of Carolyn Virginia Glick

Carolyn Virginia Glick, 103, of State College, Pa., formerly of Maysville, died July 13, 2020, at home at Juniper Village at Brookline, State College. Born April 24, 1917, in Allentown, Pa., she was the daughter of the late Ralph H. and Minerva C. (Baer) Butz. In the Opportunity School program, she combined two grades to complete public school in 11 years, graduating from Allentown High School in 1934. She earned a bachelor's degree in Library Science from Kutztown State Teachers College in 1938. During her school years she worked as a movie theater usherette.

She worked as a school librarian in Nazareth, Pennsylvania, and other schools; a clerk for Remington Rand in Manhattan; and then a librarian at Muhlenberg College in Allentown. In 1946 she married Charles F. Glick, PhD, also an Opportunity School and 1934 Allentown High School graduate. They honeymooned on Nantucket Island, Mass., and lived in New Jersey and Philadelphia. Carolyn enjoyed taking a variety of art and craft classes, and made oil paintings of landscapes, covered bridges and old stone buildings.

In 1956 they moved to Pittsburgh, then in 1962 to Murrysville, Pa., where Carolyn was active in the American Association of University Women, Symphony East, Murrysville Garden Club, and women's circle of the First Presbyterian Church. She never had a driver's license so she was eternally grateful to the many friends who drove her to those activities. At home she enjoyed gardening, flower arranging, seeing birds and wildflowers, and reading books on nature and food.

In 1987 they retired to Maysville, W.Va. Carolyn was active in the women's circle of Petersburg Presbyterian Church. They made many valued friends, and in their later years were cared for by a wonderful group of Maysville women. After her husband died in 2015, Carolyn moved to assisted living in State College, Pa., where her son visited her every day.

She is survived by her son, David C. Glick of State College, Pa.; brother William R. Butz of Bloomington, Minn.; a niece and two nephews; and great- and great-great nieces and nephews. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her sister Martha B. Lundquist, brothers- and sisters-in-law, a nephew and a great-nephew.

Donations in her memory may be made to Petersburg Presbyterian Church or the Moomau-Grant County Library.

Interment of ashes will be private in Allentown, Pa. Arrangements were made by Koch Funeral Home; memories may be shared at kochfuneralhome.com.
