Just learned of Tom's passing as I was blogging about his nickname for Perennial Ryegrass: 'Throw and Grow.' My condolences to his family and friends. We were lucky to have Tom as our Turfgrass professor in our specialized 'Ornamental Nursery Industry' program '79 on main campus. He is one of those teachers you remember for life, and due to his tutelage, my company excelled at lawn planting and renovation, over my 35 year landscaping career. Thank you Dr. Watschke!

So Sorry to Hear of your loss. I remember the early morning classes with Tom. He really helped make Turf Grass fun with hands on the turf. He was always there to answer questions after we left PSU for our career in Landscape contracting 1992.

Very sorry to hear of Tom's passing. We were close friends growing up, sports including baseball, basketball and football, etc. After high school and college we went different directions. Last saw Tom at our 50 year high school reunion. Was hoping to see him at our 60 year reunion.

Tom gave me my first "real job". He created an amazing, collaborative work environment, providing support and the freedom to test your limits. Success was praised, and failure was turned into an opportunity to grow and improve.

I am terribly saddened by the loss of Dr. Watschke. He was incredibly influential in my career and life, and he never let me forget to remain a student in all that I do. In a recent conversation, he expressed how proud he was of the efforts for positive influence on the industry being made. I thanked him for setting me and so many on the right path. He will forever be in my heart as my mentor and friend. You will be missed Dr. Watschke, and the industry cannot thank you enough! Carmen Magro

Dr. Tom was as outstanding teacher and always kept your attention at conference presentations and field days. He was one of several turf faculty members that got my interest in research. He provided me a lot of practical turf management experience outside of the classroom through his entrepreneur endeavors. Turf management has lost a great researcher and a really nice person. Tom will be missed by many of his students.
