Dearest Jan,
There are no words that can express how sorry that I am for the loss of your beloved husband and "partner in crime". I've had the pleasure of knowing you both for the past twenty twenty plus years, and I can't think of anyone that was more humble, funny, and generous than you and your husband. I will miss our conversations and our general discussions about life and the community that he loved so much. Even during this pandemic he was so worried about others, especially how our hospitality community was dealing with the pandemic. Sending virtual hugs and prayers during this difficult time.

Mel was the first, and only, person we knew when we moved to State College 29 years ago, as Jan had alerted him that my husband was a new hire at PSU coming from far away. He helped us find an apartment, and 6 months later, he called to say we should start looking for a house. He would pick me up with my 3 yr old, so he had car seat and animal crackers. One home, he walked in, and then stopped me at the door. "No," he said "this is not your house, I don't trust the look of it". He looked at 39 houses with us, patiently, and with a keen eye.
When we finally found our perfect house, we couldn't afford to have it cleaned. On closing day, we discovered that Mel had paid to have all the carpets cleaned, for us. He came later when we moved in to make sure everything was fine. He was a lovely man that we remember with such fondness. We are truly sorry to hear of his passing, and please know he will be missed. His memory is a blessing.

Jan, I am so sorry for your loss. I loved hearing his stories from his younger days. I felt like I was there with him. I cherish the time spent with him, whether having brunch at the club, lunch at Couch's, or at your camp. He will be missed by all who knew him. I'm sure Herb and Nancy gave him a warm greeting to his everlasting life. Sincerely, Larry Kruchten.

Mr Rockey, who always wanted us to call him, Mel, was one of the most humble, down to earth, classy individuals,I have ever met. He was kind, caring, thoughtful, always remembered everyone, and had a history of the Centre Region like few others.
He was always with Jan, his beloved wife, yet they both had their own lives and friends. My wife Cindy and I first met Mr. and Mrs. Rockey working at the Autoport in 1979. I greatly respected him then as a successful person and real estate agent. I have never lost respect for this man. He is a gentle giant of our community and will be sorely missed by everyone who knew him casually like us or called him a best friend.
Our greatest sympathy to Mrs.Rockey, who also always wanted us to call her Jan. Your love and relationship with your Mel was a beacon for young folks like us, who cherished anytime we shared a moment with the both of you.
Our deepest sympathy,
Dr. Roy and Cindy Love.

Jan, I am very sorry for your loss. Mel was a good man. I thoroughly enjoyed coffee and toast with Mel, Gary the rest of the regulars at the State College Diner; they adopted me and made me feel welcome to their informal club. I once said to my wife that Mel and the others made me feel like I was living in Boston and visiting the barroom call "Cheers". I miss breakfast with Mel and the others. I will pray that for the happy repose of Mel and that the Lord provide comfort to Jan and the rest of his family and friends during their time of sorrow.

Bruce and I were so sorry to hear about Mel's passing. Mel was such a big part of my younger adult life. Being one of my first bosses at Penn State, we worked together from 1969 until his retirement. He always encouraged me to be my best and told me I could achieve whatever I wanted. He was always kind and was a great friend and boss. My condolences. Mary Rockey Johnston
