Obituary of Carl Miller Fisher
Carl M. Fisher, 79 of Port Matilda, died April 12, 2021 at home.
Born October 31, 1941 in Englewood, NJ, he was the son of the late Simon Carl Fisher and Ada Catherine Miller Fisher. In 2013 he married Gay L. Allison, who survives at home.
After finishing high school at the age of 17, he moved from Greensburg, PA to State College, PA to attend the Pennsylvania State University. Carl graduated with a Bachelor of Science Degree in Electrical Engineering. He worked at the University Park campus in the office of Physical Plant from 1963 to 1983. After that, Carl became the Chief Engineer and Technical Supervisor for WPSU at Penn State from 1983-2007.
Carl was a member of the Society of Broadcast Engineers from 1976 to 1996 and became a Certified Senior Broadcast Engineer in 1979. In 2003 he received the Dave Watson Award for Technical and Engineering Excellence from PSU Public Broadcasting. In that same year, Carl received the General Manager's award from PSU Public Broadcasting for his work towards digital television transition.
Carl was a member of the PA Air National Guard, 112th Air Control Squadron, from 1964-1995. He was an active member of the Civil Air Patrol for 50 years and was a Commander of the State College Squadron for 15 years. He was awarded the meritorious service medal in 1995 for his outstanding technical skills and leadership, instrumental in elevating his unit to its highest state of readiness.
Carl received the Grover Loening Aerospace Award from the C.A.P. in July 1976. In 1991 and 1993 he was awarded the commendation medal from the PA Department of Military Affairs
In 1964, Carl became a private licensed pilot and in 1974 he became a commercial licensed pilot. He received his instrument rating in 1980. He was a certified flight instructor and enjoyed teaching his students.
Carl enjoyed square and round dancing and was a member of the Centre Squares of State College. Carl loved to spend time at the University Park airport, even when he was not teaching.
In addition to his wife, Carl is survived by three children, Catherine (Ron) Ruth, of Cornwall, PA, Stephen (Carolyn) Fisher, of Columbia, MD, and Jaime Anderson of Mechanicsburg, PA; five grandchildren: Adelyn and Jacob Ruth, Ellie and Micah Fisher, and Joshua Anderson. Also surviving is one brother, Thomas (Mary) Fisher of Naples, FL, and a stepdaughter Ashley (Bryan) Holland of Julian, PA.
Carl was predeceased by his first wife, Julia Bucciarelli Fisher in 2005.
A private funeral service will be held Wednesday, April 21, 2021 at 10:00 am at Koch Funeral Home, 2401 S. Atherton Street, with Reverend James P. Nolten officiating, immediately followed by a public graveside service at Centre County Memorial Park.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to donor's favorite charity.
