Yesterday we said goodbye to an excellent surgeon, Martin J. Fleishman, MD. I worked for Dr. Fleishman for 30 years...some referred to me as his office wife!! We would sometimes argue in the office over an office related issue and the girls in the office would say..."you two sound like an old married couple." He was a perfectionist...he was my boss.
Marty Fleishman was a devoted husband and father. He adored his wife, Gloria...he loved her deeply and oh how his face would light up when talking about his boys, Aaron and Branden. He was so very proud of them. I actually introduced Gloria to Marty never dreaming they would marry and have a family one day! I was in their wedding, there for the birth of their children and most recently he attended both my daughters weddings...he was my friend.
In the 43 years I knew him, he was always there for me and my family. All I had to do was call and he was there. Any advice he gave me, I was always 100% confident in what he said. Dr. Fleishman and I shared a mutual respect and loyalty for one another. He was passionate about his work, meticulously skilled and absolutely loved practicing medicine. He was a true asset to the Lewistown Hospital and to our Mifflin County Community!!
He was my boss...he was my friend...and he will be forever missed! ️

Gloria,
Cindy and I are saddened to hear of Marty's passing and offer our warmest condolences. We had the pleasure of being around you and Marty in social settings and are grateful to have always seen the fun side if Marty. Great with a story or a joke, Marty could hold an audience! And, the times we had more serious conversations I could hear the empathy and compassion he shared with those who were fortunate enough to meet him.
As I think about Marty, words like selfless, decency, honor and integrity flood my mind. In short, Marty was a kind and loving mensch, surely seated in a high place among the most honorable of men.

Martin you were always witty, comical at times , questioned everyone like the professor, and enjoyed social events. I have spent over thirty years treating cancer patients here in Lewistown ,and it was always an academic exercise taking care of a patient with him. You needed an explanation to justify your actions or the professor would speak. I always enjoyed the professional skills and the wonderful discussions we had over the years. You had great surgical skills, and you will never be forgotten as a fellow physician and as a person. It was just five weeks ago you called seeking my advise on the next option, so it's with profound sorrow that you passed and I can truly say there was only one Martin Fleishman. Rest in peace Martin. Our deepest sympathy too Gloria, Aaron, Branden. Ricardo "Rick" Carter, and Diane Carter

Marty and Gloria and two sons lived across the street from us for years. We can't say enough good things about him.
Back in the 90's, my mother had a long bout with cancer. When she was visiting from out of state and was having issues Marty insisted on seeing her at the hospital.
A few years after that I needed my Gall Bladder removed and my family Dr. was out of town. I called his house at 6 AM and Gloria said that he was already on his way to the hospital to make his rounds. He met me at the admitting station in the ER and stood behind me for the process. I would have to say that no one ever got admitted faster than I did that day!
Marty was a terrific neighbor and a great surgeon!

To the Family of Dr. Martin Fleishman
Last night I was told of the passing of Marty Fleishman.
I am so sorry to hear that very untimely news. Our sincere condolences go out to your entire family.
The years have passed too quickly and physical distances between us all have only made a connection between our families more difficult. Slowly that connection had become more remote. For that I am extremely sorry as well.
It had been too long and now that opportunity to reconnect is not possible.
But I do look back and reflect on the times when we were just children, back in Philadelphia. I see them as only as good times.
Three brothers, Bill, Harry, and Bernie, making their way after World War II. All had small businesses, all worked very hard for their families.
Of course all the wives worked as well. These were exceptional people. And very devoted to their family.
Seven children in all, 6 boys and a girl. All successful in their pursuit of a happy life.
My folks had the candy store ala West Side Story.
Bernie had the restaurant, ala Happy Days.
And Harry had the woolen goods business, ala the God Father.
As I remember Marty, he always had that big smile and was easy going.
A hard worker and a very good person.
From what I have read those traits continued for the rest of his life and he certainly will be missed.
Our regret is that we were not closer to share those happy events that come in all our lives
.
We will be making a contribution in support of Israel in Marty's name.
We wish you the best in this difficult time.
With our condolences.
Lynn and Gene Fleishman

Marty and I worked as general surgeons in Lewistown for many years. During that time I found him to be a compassionate, empathetic and HIGHLY talented surgeon. We shared a number of patients and assisted each other on occasional difficult cases. Patients and coworkers will miss him immensely

Marty was a great teacher and story-teller. He had an anecdote - or sometimes epic tale - for seemingly anything and everything. I’m grateful to have met him , worked with him, and learned from him. I am sending warm thoughts to Gloria - he loved you dearly - and to his two sons - he was so, so proud to be your dad.

First, what a great doctor! He truly knew his stuff! Very knowledgeable. He had a passion for educating during surgery. I had the pleasure of doing my first on call shift as a new grad nurse with him. In the years I worked with him, he talked fondly and lovingly of his family. His pride and joy was his children and wife. He always talked about the great state of Pennsylvania! He was a great man with lots of humor after getting to know him. He will be missed but not forgotten.
Rest In Peace,
Allison Laverriere

As part of the Ping-Pong group at Liberty Hill who played a lot with Marty, I was surprised and saddened to hear of his passing. All of us enjoyed him and had fun talking, telling stories and playing Ping-Pong. He enlivened our games, and was quite a good player.

Dear Gloria and sons,
I am a OB/GYN at SMHC and have known Marty for years. I would know it was going to be a good day when Marty was in the doctor's lounge between cases. He always had a story to tell and it usually was about his family. His love for all of you was evident every time we spoke. I've heard white water kayaking stories, seen the video of the flipped ATV in Alaska, and have had updates on his son's lives for years. It just won't be the same in the lounge without him. My condolences.

My colleague Dr. Landry pretty much summed it all up for us. Doc Fleishman is going to be missed more than you know. I would emphasize how much he LOVED chatting about his kids and his wife. We loved hearing his stories. God Bless him and his family and friends. Bob Ascanio, M.D.

To Marty’s family,
I am an anesthiologist in Maine who worked with Marty over many weekends; We spent many hours together in the operating room. You do not know any of us but we all know about you and your family. He frequently spoke very fondly about you, such that those in the OR during any one of his cases heard a different story, but always filled with extreme pride and affection. Marty was a very dear man who was extremely well like by his operating room family here in Maine and will be missed beyond words. My sincerest condolences to all of you. Thank you so much for sharing him with us - it was an honor and a joy to know him.
Best
