Obituary of Richard Ward Van Horn

Richard Ward Van Horn, 76, of State College, died Thursday, October 28, 2021, at home.

 

Born in Pittsburgh on September 27, 1945, he was the son of the late Roy and Helen Tilghman Van Horn.  He was also preceded in death by his sister, Nancy Winans. In August 1969 he married Barbara Hart, who survives.

 

He is also survived by two children, Matthew Van Horn and his wife, Aglika, of Mountlake Terrace, WA and Kristen Van Horn of Santa Fe, NM; grandchildren, Nikolai and Siana, and a brother, James Van Horn, of Warren, PA.

 

Richard graduated from Titusville High School where he lettered in basketball, track and field, and football. He went to Hobart College where he played football and lacrosse and was a member of Kappa Sigma. He received his bachelor degree in Economics. He joined the United States Army and was on active duty in 1969-1970 in Cam Ranh during the Viet Nam war. He was discharged from the military as a 1st Lieutenant with a Viet Nam Service Medal, Viet Nam Campaign Medal, and a Bronze Star. He was a banker by profession, working in several banks in Maryland and Pennsylvania over the years.

 

Richard enjoyed bird hunting and loved his bird dog. He also loved fly fishing, golf, wood working, making breakfasts and desserts, exploring national parks, Penn State sports, sitting on the beach, and gin and tonics.

 

He was an active member of the Rotary Club, Trout Unlimited, and Sons of the American Revolution, serving in leadership positions in each of those organizations. 

Visitation will be Friday, November 5, 2021 from 2-4pm at Koch Funeral Home, 2401 S. Atherton Street, State College.

A private service will be held at the convenience of the family.
