Obituary of Agnes M. Cavigelli

Agnès Marie Cavigelli (née Charmillot) died peacefully June 7, 2022 at Foxdale Village in State College, Pennsylvania. Agnes was born July 25, 1935 in Vicques, Switzerland to Etienne and Thérèse Charmillot.

In 1960, Agnès married George Cavigelli, who was from a neighboring village, and they immediately moved to Massachusetts where George worked as an electrical engineer. Intending to stay for only two years, the move lasted the rest of their lives. Agnès and George raised three children in Lexington, Massachusetts and then retired to State College, Pennsylvania in 2010 to be near their young grandchildren.

In the US, Agnès continued her career in watchmaking at the Waltham Watch Company, until she became a full-time mother. While her children were growing up she was active in Cub Scouts and Campfire Girls. She was an excellent cook, fusing Swiss farm cooking with Julia Child French haute cuisine. When her children entered school, she returned to work in the Lexington Public Schools, first as a 'lunch lady' baking bread and desserts, and later as a teacher's aide. Agnès was very active in the Swiss Society of Boston, where she served as Membership Chairperson for more than 40 years.

Agnès is best remembered for her great sense of humor and an ease for entertaining loved ones and friends. She was always there to support others and she strongly appreciated the integrity and good humor of her friends and family. She easily broke into song when prompted, whether it was a church hymn in Latin, a Swiss folk song, or a popular tune from the 1950s. She loved the camaraderie of playing games like jass (traditional Swiss card game) or Mexican train dominoes, and constantly exercised her mind with sudoku and crosswords. To her family's frustration, she frequently won the Apples to Apples game that they could convince her to play.

Although she chose to become a US citizen, Agnès remained close to family in Switzerland. She visited them as often as possible, often with her nuclear family, and in return she welcomed many international friends and relatives into their home, and was a New England tour guide extraordinaire.

Agnès leaves behind her loving husband of 62 years, George, and their three children, Jean-Pierre (and wife Becky in Casper, Wyoming), Michel (and wife Martha in Greenbelt, Maryland) and Sonia (and husband Bob in State College, Pennsylvania), and grandchildren Katia in Washington, DC, Luc and Caleb in State College, Pennsylvania, step-grandkids, Noah in New Orleans, Louisiana and Anna in Peoria, Arizona, and two step-great-grandchildren. In Switzerland, she leaves behind a sister, Marie-Ange Alleman and 11 nieces and nephews and their children. She was preceded in death by two brothers, André and Maurice Charmillot, and one sister, Angèle Schneiter.

Agnès Marie Cavigelli (née Charmillot) est décédée paisiblement le 7 juin 2022 au Foxdale Village à State College, Pennsylvanie. Agnès est née le 25 juillet 1935 à Vicques, en Suisse, d'Etienne et Thérèse Charmillot.

En 1960, Agnès épouse George Cavigelli, originaire d'un village voisin, et ils déménagent immédiatement dans le Massachusetts où George travaille comme ingénieur électricien. Elle se mettait facilement à chanter lorsqu'on l'y invitait, qu'il s'agisse d'un hymne religieux en latin, d'une chanson folklorique suisse ou d'un air populaire des années 1950. Elle aimait la camaraderie des jeux comme le jass (jeu de cartes suisse traditionnel) ou les dominos mexicains, et s'exerçait constamment l'esprit avec des sudokus et des mots croisés. À la grande frustration de sa famille, elle gagnait souvent le jeu des pommes aux pommes auquel ils pouvaient la convaincre de jouer.

Bien qu'elle ait choisi de devenir citoyenne américaine, Agnès est restée proche de sa famille en Suisse. Elle leur rendait visite aussi souvent que possible, souvent avec sa famille nucléaire, et en retour, elle accueillait chez elle de nombreux amis et parents internationaux, et était un guide touristique extraordinaire de la Nouvelle-Angleterre.
