Obituary of Kathryn Ann Detwiler
Kathryn A. Detwiler (age 85) of State College, PA died on the 24th of February 2023 at the Milton Hershey Medical Center, Hershey, PA. Born January 16, 1938, in Lehigh County, PA, she was the daughter of the late Harold P. and Anna G. (Paulus) Werst. On December 24, 1960, in Allentown, PA, she married Wayne L. Detwiler. She is survived by three children: COL(ret) Wayne L. Detwiler JR and his wife, Kimberly, of McLean, VA; Ann E. Merick and her husband, L. James, of Glen Rock, PA; COL(ret) Keith A. Detwiler and his wife, Michelle, of Falls Church, VA. She is also survived by five grandchildren: Jacob, Lorraine, Madeleine, Wayne III (Leo), and Sydney. In addition to her parents, she was predeceased by her brother, Bill Werst.
In 1959, Kathy earned a BS degree in Math from Moravian College, Bethlehem, PA. For sixty-one years, she served as her Moravian College class correspondent. In 1974, she earned a Master of Education degree from Penn State University. She taught Math in both Bethlehem and State College public secondary schools for twenty-five years. Following her retirement from full-time teaching, Kathy volunteered with the Tutoring Program of Math in GED of IU10, with the AAUW Book Sale in pricing Math books, with the Academy Selection Committee of Congressman G.T. Thompson, and was a Pen Pal with the Bald Eagle School District.
The viewing will be held at Koch's Funeral Home (2401 S. Atherton Street, State College, PA) on Friday, March 3d from 5-7pm, and funeral services will be held at Emmanuel Lutheran Church (also: Albright-Bethune United Methodist Church: 206 S. Burrowes Street, State College, PA) on Saturday, March 4th at 11:00am. All internment services will be private at the Crossroads Church of the Brethren. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made in her memory to Juniata Valley Council, Boy Scouts of America, 9 Taylor Drive, Reedsville, PA 17084.
