George and I were best friends growing up in the wilds of Smoke Rise NJ in the '50s. A typical sleep over at his house on Long Meadow Rd. might begin with a few early morning chess matches while watching "Modern Farmer" on the TV in Dr. Downsbrough's study - building a fort from old split rails atop the mountain behind his house - water cress & peanut butter or cream cheese sandwiches & fresh picked berries from their garden - taking turns in the front seat of his dad's glider flying out of Rockaway Valley or riding a horse for my first time at Captain Oak's farm. At dinner I was introduced to rutabaga or turnips.
We shared a play group of five-year-olds, Emmy Kline's cub scout pack, boy scout Falcon Patrol, ball room dance classes, bicycling or hitching everywhere in Smoke Rise. We parted a bit when he attended the private Wilson school in Mountain Lakes but later, I followed him to Montclair Academy taking the 6:30AM bus every day and returning very late after soccer or wrestling practice. Summers were filled with camping trips, sailing on the lake or invested in endless gin rummy games with young ladies on the beach. Summer jobs sent us in different directions but the Downsbrough's did visit Christmas Cove Maine one summer where I now live and even considered buying a nearby Thrumcap Island home. I miss my long and loyal friend George and his family but plan on reminiscing with them in our next chapter.

George and Tamara and Leschia and I travelled many roads together for many years sharing life in State College. When they decided to settle down and move to Bellefonte we stayed in touch quite a bit celebrating holidays, birthdays and anniversaries together. Many friends from those distant days. Lyn and Leslie, Nina and Nina, Shirley and Terry, Patti, Anna, Sarah. Good times in the 70's in State College and before that a bunch of memories and friends from Redington Pond School in Maine where we worked together. I moved to California in the early 80's and distance and employment meant much less contact. George and Tamara got buys building a wonderful family that celebrated life in their home in Bellefonte and combined chores and travel and always more chores. We visited from time to time either in Pennsylvania or California and even Anguilla. From days at Yale and farming, shepherding, hunting and camping across America, we had good good times. Time passes but stories about George and his adventures will be told forever because he truly touched so many people with his sense of bonhomie. For sure he will be missed but in many ways he will be with us all forever in the light touch of a spring wind, the murmur of the river and always in the stars that shine bright at night.

Tamara and family, My condolences to you during this time of loss. George had many talents and left us too soon. He had a lot of wisdom to share and put it to good use in service to others and the greater good (polittics)! I'm glad to have spent time in his company and will miss him greatly. His legacy will endure. Bruce Budd
