Mike was a quiet gentleman scholar: a poet, historian and memory keeper whose profound respect for people, words and language was apparent in his words and deeds. He was the heart and soul of the Memoirs Group--I’m grateful for Mike’s leadership and friendship and am deeply saddened by his passing.
To Mike’s family: I feel like I know you all through his stories. How lovingly he described you and how grateful he was for the richness you provided in his life. I hope his stories will keep him close and give you comfort. Deepest condolences.

I am so sorry to hear of Michael's passing. He was a truly benevolent and intelligent person, devoted to his family, with a passion for writing and teaching poetry. I am thankful for the short time I had to know him as a friend and mentor.

Mike was a true gentleman – full of insight, good will, and a gentle spirit. We shared a love of history (including family memoirs) and literature. He was a devoted friend, sharing his personal essays and many good thoughts with me. He made the world more livable. Sad as I am, I am enriched by our friendship.

Michael was the patriarch of our combined clans and a talented and loving husband, father, grandfather, brother, and cousin to me. We were separated in time and space, but we corresponded regularly via email. I admired his talent as a creative and prolific poet. I purchased all his works and extra copies to share with friends here in Tennessee. His wisdom, demeanor, and insight will be missed as we were like minded kindred spirits as well as beloved relatives. Being writers we shared many common beliefs and values. A special one was a belief his Quaker mother shared with him and him with me. “The inner light will tell you what is right and the purpose of life it to serve.” He and I shared a love for poetry and a love for history. He majored in it in college, and I wrote about it as a local historian. I shall miss his wisdom, humor, and gentle nature. Go forth in eternal peace my dear cousin. Ita fiat fiat ...

I am so, so saddened to hear of Mike's passing. He was a dedicated volunteer at Schlow Centre Region Library, where I first met him, and got to continue our relationship through our mutual membership at the UUFCC. He was kind, gentle, and a wonderful poet and teacher who loved the craft of wordsmanship. My sincerest sympathies to all his family and friends. His poetry will remain on my shelves and in my heart.
