Obituary of Clyde Doll

Clyde W. Doll, 79, of State College, died Saturday, November 3, 2012, at Greenhills Village, State College. Born September 4, 1933, in Wyndmoor, he was the son of the late Erwin L. and Lottie Schlere Doll. On August 17, 1957 he married Marie Poole, who survives. Also surviving are his 4 children, David A. Doll and his wife, Christina, of Boalsburg, Stephen B. Doll of Philadelphia, Susan M. Nejako and her husband, David, of Lansdale, Michael Clyde Doll and his wife, Radel, of Berwick; one sister, Jean Livezey and her husband, John, of Brigantine; five grandchildren, Jason Doll, Matthew and Laura Nejako, Mia and Miles Doll; numerous nieces and nephews and great nieces and great nephews; and a sister in law, Elaine Doll, of Kissimmee, FL. He was preceded in death by two brothers, Ronald Doll and Leroy Doll. He was a 1952 graduate of Springfield High School, in Glenside. He graduated with a Bachelor's degree in Business Administration from Penn State University in 1959. Clyde served in the Army during the Korean Conflict. Clyde was a salesman in both the insurance and commercial lighting industries. He was Co- chairman of the first juried sidewalk sale for the Central PA Festival of the Arts. He enjoyed wood sculpture and participated in Artists in Action at the Festival for 10 years. Clyde was a founding member of the Penn State Barbell Club and participated in the American Drug Free Powerlifting Association where he set 31 national and 3 world records. As a Pennsylvania Special Olympics Powerlifting Sports Advisor he trained coaches and athletes throughout Pennsylvania from 1987 through 1995. In 1990 as part of a Sports America Program, he traveled to Trinidad and Tobago to train Special Olympics coaches and athletes in powerlifting. In 1991 Clyde was the head powerlifting coach for Pennsylvania's Special Olympics World Games team. In 1995 he served in the same capacity in addition to advising teams from France, Trinidad and Tobago. He was named coach of the year in the Pennsylvania Hall of Fame for the Special Olympics in 1992. He participated in the Great American Workout at the White House in 1991 and 1992. At the forefront of recognizing the importance of strength training for seniors, in 1991 through 2007, he developed a strength training program for Brookline Village and the community. Articles about his program were published in the USA Today, Philadelphia Inquirer and other newspapers. Clyde's company, The Golden Fitness Connection, produced a video of a strength training program for seniors and it has sold more than 60,000 copies worldwide. Clyde was Santa Claus for many community organizations as well as many years at The Corner Room. He was a member of the St. Andrews Episcopal Church. Visitation will be 5:00 to 8:00 p.m., on Saturday, November 10, 2012, at Koch Funeral Home, 2401 S. Atherton St., State College. A celebration of life will be at 2:00 p.m., on Sunday, November 11, 2012 at the Funeral Home, with his son, Stephen B. Doll officiating.
