Obituary of Ralph Moyer

Ralph W. Moyer of Huntingdon, PA, formerly of State College, died April 18, 2014. He was the son of the late Warren Eshbach Moyer and Katie Weller Moyer and was born on February 22, 1926, in New Hanover Township, Montgomery County, PA. He married Lora Lynn Riley on September 15, 1951, in Pottstown, PA, who survives. Also surviving are their children, Jack Moyer and wife, Janet Lewis, and Deborah and husband, John Albert. Their grandchildren are Christopher Moyer and wife, Naomi Stone, Colin Moyer and wife, Alicia Miceli, Katie Moyer, Craig Moyer and great-granddaughter, Lydia. He is survived by his brother Paul Moyer and his sister-in-law June Moyer. In addition, he had many nieces, nephews, great-nieces and nephews and great-great nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by brothers Wilmer, Harold, Kenneth, and Warren, sister, Helen, brother- in-law, William Werner, sisters-in-law Margaret, Colleen, Vera, Katherine, and Jane Moyer, and granddaughter, Jessica Moyer. He was proud to have served twice in the military and was the last surviving brother of five to have served in World War II. He was in the U.S. Army Air Corps for two years during WWII and was one of the first U.S. service men to occupy Japan after the war ended in 1945. He served for two years as a First Lieutenant in the U.S. Air Force during the Korean Conflict. A 1951 graduate of The Pennsylvania State University, he also completed graduate studies in education administration at The University of Pennsylvania. While at Penn State, he was a member and president of Pi Kappa Phi fraternity and a student manager and letterman on the Penn State football team. He was a lifetime member of the Penn State Alumni Association. For twenty-two years, he was the State College Area School District Business Manager and School Board Secretary. Prior to holding that position, he was the Phoenixville Area School District Business Manager in Phoenixville, PA. While working for the State College Area Schools, he was president of The Pennsylvania Association of School Business Officials (PASBO). In 1976, PASBO selected him as the outstanding school business official in the state. In 1981, he was one of the founders of the Pennsylvania School District Liquid Asset Fund and served as president in 1983. He was the proprietor of Pennsylvania Country Antiques, collecting and repairing antique clocks and refinishing antique furniture and spinning wheels. After his retirement from the school district, he was PASBO conference coordinator, providing school finance seminars. During the same time, he was a business consultant for many Pennsylvania school districts. Prior to moving to Huntingdon, he was a longtime member of the State College Presbyterian Church. Visitation will be Wednesday, April 23, 2014, from 10:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. at Koch Funeral Home, 2401 S. Atherton St., State College. Funeral services will follow at 12:00 p.m. at the funeral home with Harold G. Williams, Jr. officiating. Burial will be at Graysville Cemetery, Spruce Creek. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the State College Presbyterian Church, 132 West Beaver Avenue, State College, PA, 16801, or a charity of your choice.
