Obituary of Charles Breon

Charles Leroy "Pap" Breon "Charlie", 94, of State College passed away at home on Saturday, May 3, 2014. Born at home in Pleasant Gap on December 11, 1919, the eighth child of Daniel George and Nora Alice Tressler Breon. Charlie graduated from State College High School in 1939, where he played basketball, baseball, and soccer, making the All-Star Team his senior year. On June 21, 1980, he married the former Elizabeth "Betty" Marie Bobb Row, who survives at home. Charlie served in the United States Army during World War II with the 3rd Division Artillery which was stationed in Darmstead, Germany. He worked for George Grain Construction, Shaffer Store, Temple's Market, and Beaver Brother's Baking Company. In 1984 Charlie retired from the United States Post Office in State College after 29 years of service. He was president of National Association of Letter Carriers No. 1495 for eight years. Charlie served as the first Patton Twp. Police Officer and part time State College Police Officer. He was a member of the American Legion Post 245. He was a past member of the Alpha Fire Company and Fire Police, and Moose Lodge 206, Bellefonte. Charlie played baseball for Woodycrest, Lemont, and State College, and Fast Pitch for Woodycrest, Park Forest, and the United States Post Office Teams. He was a PIAA baseball umpire and a soccer official. In 1995, he was inducted into the Amateur Softball Association Softball Umpire Hall of Fame. Charlie and his good friend, Jake Salsgiver, umpired many, many, Little League, High School, County, College, Slow Pitch, and Fast Pitch Softball games together. He enjoyed hunting and loved playing cards, especially 500, Pinochle and Cribbage. In addition to his wife, Charlie is also survived by his daughter, Virginia "Ginny" Eleanor Hunt and husband, Wayne; son, Charles L. Breon II and wife, Cindy; step-sons, Thomas R. Row and wife, Diane, and Steven D. Row and wife, Marga; step-daughter, Susan L. Miller and husband, Dayne; grandchildren, Donna Hawbaker, Frank Breon, Brian McDonald, Sean McDonald, Christy McMullen, and Clint Breon; step-grandchildren, Stacy Fisher, Stephanie Keel, Jocelyn Weddle, Shannon Trout, Jennifer Hunt, Patty Hunt, Michael Row, Brandon Miller, and Chris Hunt; and many great-grandchildren. In addition to his parents, Charlie is preceded in death by his daughter, Frannie A. Breon on April 9, 1955; step-daughter, Marjorie W. Row Brown on October 9, 2001; brothers, John, Maurice, Rhome, Donald, Harry, and Floyd; and sisters, Lydia Long, Edna Harpster, Madeline Pollard, Nora Breon, Mariam Kustanbauter, and Bella Breon. He was the last of his generation. Visitation will be held on Tuesday, May 6, 2014 from 2:00p.m. to 4:00 p.m. and 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. at Koch Funeral Home, 2401 S. Atherton St. State College, PA. Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Wednesday, May 7, 2014 at Koch Funeral Home with Rev. Troy Hickman, officiating. Burial will be in Boalsburg Cemetery. Military honors will be accorded at the cemetery.
