Obituary of Philip Cady

Philip D. Cady, 81, of Lemont, died Tuesday, July 8, 2014, at the Fairways at Brookline. Born June 26, 1933, in Elmira, NY, he was the son of the late Hugh Cady and Martha Budnik Cady. On October 1, 1955, he married Shirley Broadbent Cady, who survives at home. He is also survived by four children, Stephen and his wife Kathy of Lemont, Joyce Driscoll of Lemont, Michael and his wife Lori of Woodbine, MD, and Thomas of Pleasant Gap; one brother, John "Jack" and his wife Diane of Mansfield; one sister, Alice Kelly of Mount Dora, FL; seven grandchildren, James Cady and his wife Janet, Megan Calon and her husband Paul, Erin and Shannon Driscoll, Michelle, Kristin, and Matthew Cady; seven great-grandchildren, Trevor, Zachary and Carter Cady, Natalie and Hannah Cady, Blake Couch and Abbey Calon; and many dear nieces, nephews, and cousins. He was preceded in death by a daughter Phyllis, a son Alan, and a sister Marilyn Kemp. He was a 1951 graduate of Mansfield High School. He received his Bachelors, Masters and Ph.D. in Civil Engineering from the Pennsylvania State University. Philip was a Professor of Civil Engineering and a Concrete Materials Specialist at the Pennsylvania State University for 30 years from which he retired as a Distinguished Alumni Professor. Previous employers included Lago Oil and Transport Co. in Aruba, Netherlands, Esso Standard Oil Co. in Baltimore, MD, Ohio Department of Highways in Columbus, OH, and Louis Berger Associates in Harrisburg. His many accomplishments included receiving the Sanford E. Thompson Award of ASTM, the Penn State Engineering Society Award for Outstanding Achievement in Research, a certificate of recognition of meritorious contribution to the Charles B. Dudley Award's winning publication, a recipient of Distinguished Alumni Professorship, honored by the American Concrete Institute with a named symposium, and recognized by numerous "Who's Who" publications in the engineering and science fields. He was the author of many scientific and/or technical publications and received a patent for development of a polymer concrete. Following his retirement from the Pennsylvania State University, he acted as an independent consultant specializing in concrete forensics and expert witness testimony. His volunteer work included global contributions such as the building of water wells in third-world countries. He also served on many local boards and committees and was a coach for youth baseball for many years. He was the perfect husband and father. He was a great provider and role model who enjoyed sharing his hobbies and interests with his family, including hunting and fishing trips, and baseball and football games. He was a member of Our Lady of Victory Catholic Church where he was active in church activities. The family would like to thank Our Lady of Victory Church, the staff at Brookline, and the staff at the Home Nursing Agency for their excellent and loving care. Visitation will be 2-4 pm and 6-8 pm, Tuesday, July 15, 2014 at Koch Funeral Home, 2401 South Atherton Street, State College. Funeral service will be held at 10:30 am, Wednesday, July 16, 2014 at Our Lady of Victory Church with burial following at the Centre County Memorial Park.
