Obituary of Fielder Newton

Fielder Nelson Newton, of State College, passed away on Friday, October 24, 2014, at age 91. He was born September 23, 1923, in Sharon, Pennsylvania, the son of Lawrence L. and Leona V. Newton. On August 12, 1944 he married Marjorie R. Cherry, who survives at home. A 1941 graduate of Sharon High School, Fielder then attended Texas A&M University. In 1942, he transferred to The Pennsylvania State University where he graduated with a Bachelor of Science degree in Mechanical Engineering. An Army Air Force Veteran of World War II, Fielder served as First Lieutenant Lead Navigator with the 389th Bomb Group, Second Air Division, Eighth Air Force in the European Theatre of Operations. He received the EAME medal with four bronze battle stars and the Air Medal with two Oak Leaf clusters. Following the war years and finishing his education, he worked in engineering sales and management to the steel industry and was a life member of the Iron and Steel Society, and the AIME. Fielder was a member of the St. Paul's United Methodist Church, a 32nd degree Mason and a life member of Kedron Masonic Lodge, 389, New Castle Consistary and Syria Shrine. As a member of the WWII Second Air Division, he served on the Executive Committee and was Vice-President of the 389th Bomb Group. He was co-founder and President of the Western Wing and served on the Board of the Pennsylvania Chapter of the Eighth Air Force Historical Society. He was a life member of The Pennsylvania State University Alumni Association and a member of the Sigma Phi Sigma/ Theta Delta Chi Fraternity. Fielder is survived by his wife of 70 years and had a deep pride for their four sons; Lawrence L. and his wife, Rebecca, of Huntingdon, G. William and his wife, Glenda, of Nashville, TN, Jeffrey N. and his wife, Carolyn of Pleasanton, CA, and Scott N. of State College. His seven grandchildren are Katherine Newton Fischer and her husband, Matthew of Hingham, MA, Laura Newton Costa and her husband, Michael of Baltimore, MD, Stephen L. Newton and his wife, Kelly, of Hingham, MA, Megan Newton Lanese and her husband, Chris, of Olympia, WA, Bradley L. Newton of Scottsdale, AZ, James W. Newton of Chicago, IL, Amy E. Newton of Pleasanton, CA, and two step-grandchildren; Lauren M. Lowe of Chicago, IL, and R. Harrison Lowe of Nashville, TN. Great-Grandchildren are Casey, Colton, Cooper and Violet Fischer, Sadie Costa, Claire, Caitlin, and Quenton Lanese, and step-great grandson, Ashton Lowe. Friends will be received Sunday, November 2, 2014 from 1:30 to 3:00 at St. Paul's United Methodist Church where a memorial service will be held following visitation with his pastors presiding. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to The Pennsylvania State University, Eighth Air Force Archives Endowment at the Paterno Library, University Park, PA 16802-1808, or to St. Paul's United Methodist Church Building Fund, 205 E. College Ave., State College, PA 16801. Arrangements are under the care of Koch Funeral Home, State College.
