In a recent on-line search for old friends, I was shocked to learn about Jamie's untimely passing. I refer to him so informally because, it's probably safe to say, I knew him before virtually anyone else who has contributed to this page thus far, and way before he earned his medical credentials: Jamie and I met in first grade at P.S. 179 in Brooklyn; we lived about two blocks from each other. We were classmates through the sixth grade. How competitive we were, especially when it came to math and science tests! I remember spending many a lunch time at my house so he could peruse my DC comics.
When he and his family moved, after sixth grade, to near the other end of Ocean Parkway (it felt like the other side of the world), we continued to stay in touch, primarily by bike. One summer, after they moved to NJ (apparently due to the closing of the Brooklyn Navy Yard), our parents arranged for me to spend a few days at his new house. His parents asked us what we wanted to do. He begged to go to Brooklyn, for Nathan's. He also complained about the lack of a decent bakery and deli near his new home.
Nevertheless, his parents arranged for two great day trips: to the Bethlehem Steel Workers, and to Atlantic City where we saw the high-diving horse on the Steel Pier, and the Lettermen. How he and Corey argued over who would be his father's "navigator" on the drive in their white Rambler (a '62, if memory serves)!
Our paths went in somewhat different directions after that, but even while he was in medical school, we spent time together--where else--on the New York Subway Nostalgia train! We also went to the Paramount Theater at Columbus Circle to see "The French Connection".
I'm so sorry I never arranged a meeting with him in the recent past. Rest peacefully, my friend.
If any family members (Corey?) or friends wish to share memories of our departed friend, please feel free to contact me - bellebergs@aol.com.

I'm so glad I had taken the opportunity to tell Dr. Weiner that he was my hero. His thoroughness and skill caught my lung cancer in the nick of time. I will be eternally grateful for the extra years he gave me. Both my husband and I saw Dr. Weiner and we always felt extremely well cared for. Dr. Weiner and nurse Kathy were an amazing team. I will miss you, your fantastic medical prowess and your communication with me in a way that I knew you cared about your patients. I will also miss your occasional jokes that always put a smile on my face (i.e. 3M diet!) Thank you Dr. Weiner. God surely has a special place for you.

I knew Jamie from our days at Downstate when he was a medical student and I was a nursing student. We lived in the same student apartment building. I remember he had a wealth of knowledge (about everything, just about) and proudly told me he was a member of MENSA. I do remember his love of classical music. I guess since both of us were students in the health professions he once asked me if I had a favorite organ. I told him I had not thought about this. He told me his was the pancreas because of its complexity and all the functions it performs. It was sad to learn of his passing. My thoughts go out to his family. May his memory be a blessing.

My family and I were greatly saddened to hear of the loss of Dr. Weiner.
Just over five years ago we moved our parents back to Corning, where we grew up, as my father, then in his mid 80's, had become very weak and had fallen a few times. We were not satisfied with the care he was receiving in rural southern Pennsylvania and hoped Guthrie could help him.
We very fortunate to meet Dr. Weiner as he ran tests, put him in the hospital, and diagnosed him with excessive calcium in his bloodstream. A few days in the hospital, he recovered and lived five more years.
I was fond of saying your husband saved his life.
In subsequent visits I was fortunate to hear your husband's opinions on classical music and discuss iPhone apps.
I will be playing Raff's Symphony No. 5 "Lenore" this weekend in his honor.
In closing, let me again express our condolences and thanks for all that he did for my family.
With warmest regards,
P

Elaine, we never met, but I have been a colleague of Jamie's since he arrived in Corning. As a radiologist, I always enjoyed our discussions of mutual patients. But then it got much more personal when he became the patient. He maintained a stiff upper lip for as long as we had conversations.
He always wanted me to read his CT studies, which meant that I was often the one to convey the findings to him before his oncologist even knew the results.
We radiologists are usually insulated from the effects of our interpretations. The occasional patients with whom I develop a personal relationship and who count on my interpretations are very important to me, even though they so often include having to convey bad news. This happened more and more this past year, but when Jamie called for consultation regarding some other patient he maintained his good spirits at least to me.
I will miss him. He was a good man.

It's so very sad to hear about Jamie.
I can remember at Rutgers how joyfully he would listen (with his amazing gift of "perfect pitch") to Beethoven's music during the week of December 16 in celebration of the composer's birthday.
This week, I have been listening to Beethoven and remembering Jamie.

So shocked and saddened to hear this. Dr Weiner was an excellent physician, he was genius. He was probably the most intelligent man I've ever had the pleasure of knowing. I worked with him for years in Lewistown, and lost track of him when he moved away. The nurses speak of him often.
I will never forget him. .......
