Obituary of Laverne Thomas
Many words come to mind when describing LaVerne M. Thomas: warrior, kindhearted, love-filled, and the most beautiful spirit. She was full of life and adventure. She loved heartily and was loved deep by so many. We are humbled and in awe of how many lives she impacted.
Although she was highly educated (MBA from Cornell University) and trained in finance and business, she was a trailblazer and Renaissance woman. She owned her own business after working at Standard and Poors on Wall Street. She was an active leader in her profession, even in retirement.
We draw from her strength and perseverance. She was proud to tell people that she fought breast cancer for over 30 years. She embodied the spirit of giving, and blessed others with her gifts, advice, quilts, financial knowledge and her mere presence. To say that she will be missed is a complete understatement, as she is such an integral part of our hearts, woven into our souls just like the love she wove into her quilts and cooking.
She is leaving her devoted and beloved husband, Dr. Darryl C. Thomas; children Jerry, Andrea (and Robert Cochran), Rachel, and Miriam; her siblings, Phyllis and Juan Stricklan, Monroe Walton Jr., Linda Gray, and Eric Walton; precious grandchildren, great grandchildren, nieces, nephews, cousins, family and friends. She will join in heaven her parents, Monroe and Rosetta Walton; Joyce Walton and siblings; and other friends and family.
A Memorial service will be at 3 p.m., on Saturday, January 10, 2015, at State College Assembly of God, 2201 University Drive, State College, with the Reverend Steve Silliman officiating.
Memorial contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society, Centre Unit, 123 S. Sparks Street, State College, PA 16801.
Arrangements are under the care of Koch Funeral Home, State College. Online condolences and signing of the guest book may be entered at www.kochfuneralhome.com.
