Carolyn, Joe’s wife was my older sister; I am the youngest of the Bottorf family.
When I was thirteen my mother died unexpectedly. My father had passed away several years earlier, and all of my siblings were on their own. I was alone.
Thankfully, Carolyn and Joe invited me to live with them. For the next ten years, their home was my home. They provided me with a room. Joe taught me to drive, helped me buy my first two cars, did the things for me that one expects from their father, and eventually walked me down the aisle when I got married. In essence they became a second set of parents.
Finally, for the last 58 years, coming home for me meant returning to the farm. I am forever grateful to this wonderful man and my sister for everything they did for me. May they rest in peace.

Joe and I met 59 years ago this month when I started dating Joe’s sister-in-law, Sandy. Almost immediately we became good friends. The visits back to “the farm” since our wedding in 1963 are too numerous to calculate. Every visit was a great treat. In the early years with our little children, Joe would make available one of his great tractors for tractor rides. (I would even take our children along.) Then there was hospitality for us in our motor home to camp on the farm on football weekends. The camping on the farm went on for 35 years. And when they opened the dairy store every trip included great ice cream treats. Along the way our three children attended PSU and enjoyed the privilege of Aunt Carolyn and Uncle Joe being close by. Our son has business reasons to return to the University several times a year and still manages a quick visit and enjoys an ice cream cone every chance he gets. So, to Joe and Carolyn, you were such wonderful in-laws. I am now missing not only good in-laws, but great friends. May they rest in peace. They certainly have earned it.

I was sorry to hear about the passing of Mr. Meyer. Although we have been buying our milk at Meyer Dairy since we moved here in 2004, I've never had the occasion to meet him in person. I did, however, have a phone conversation with him that was very sweet. I called and left a message at Meyer Dairy about 2 years ago to ask about getting their delicious chocolate milk donated to the Nittany Track and Field track meet that was happening at the high school in early June. Mr. Meyer called me late one night to ask why we would want chocolate milk at the track meet. Beyond the fact that his chocolate milk was incredible, I explained that protein is important after exercise and runners especially love chocolate milk after racing. He was very generous in donating individual bottles of chocolate milk. Needless to say, his chocolate milk sold out quickly.
I was impressed that he took the time to call back personally.
I hope your family takes comfort in the wonderful memories he must have generated in his 97 years! God love him:)

I attended a meeting in the Meyer Library at Faith UCC just a couple of days ago, and it reminded me of what Joe has meant to State College seemingly forever. His love of seeing his customers caused him to plant himself behind the cash register at the Dairy. His care and concern for the environment of his State College was impressive. Clovis and I wish for you all the peace that comes from knowing his was a life extremely well=lived,
Marilyn and Clovis Morrisson

I never knew or met Mr. Meyer but I enjoyed his legacy. As a kid, I went out with my parents to get milk and other dairy products at Meyers. After I got my driving license, I loved the opportunity to go get milk at the store. Thank you Mr. Meyer for contributing to the memories of this old guy who used to live in State College!!

I used to cut Joe's hair at my barber shop in Boalsburg for years. My stepdaughter's first job was working for Joe at the store and she absolutely loved him. He was a great guy and will be missed by many!

Denny and family, thoughts and prayers at this time of loss. I know your Dad made many wonderful memories for all of you to look back on. Joe was a kind man and was always working. Not many men now days have that kind of work ethic and enthusiasm for doing a job he really loved.

I worked at for Joe as my first job back in 2010-2012. He was such a great, loving, and caring gentleman. I remember sometimes he would be walking around the dairy late, swinging his cane and smiling. I know that he will be missed in the community. Sending lots of love and prayers to the family.

Joe was a great friend to new businesses and startup businesses throughout Central Pennsylvania. He helped many people and created the best chocolate milk on the planet. I always enjoyed visiting Meyer Dairy in the evening so I could talk with Joe as he ran the cash register. Joe may have been the oldest active business owner in Centre County history. I always enjoyed working with Joe.
Condolences to his family,
Centre County Commissioner Mark Higgins

Oh this is such sad news! We have lost a great example and rock for our Community. I used to work for Joe when I was in High School. We got to be good friends. I would always stop back to his office every so often over the many years to check in with him. He would always ask about my sisters (who worked for him), my family and our kiddos which he would ask about them by name. We were just in this past Friday evening- with college friends (who worked for him as well). He will be greatly missed! Prayers for the family and loved ones who will miss him.
