Born November 2, 1923, in State College, PA he is one of 4 children of the late Joseph Curtis Meyer Sr. and Elsie Mae Peters. On June 6, 1945 he married Carolyn Marie Bottorf. Carolyn was his devoted wife and loyal partner during their 75 years of marriage. She preceded him in death on January 15, 2021. He was also preceded in death by three siblings, Donald C. Meyer, Carolyn Cunningham and Evelyn Lynn and his daughter, Margaret Davis.
Surviving are three children, Barry Meyer and spouse Diana, East Berlin, PA; Nancy Smeltzer and spouse, Jerry, Canton, OH; Dennis Meyer and spouse, Cheryl, State College, PA; sister-in-law, Sandra Durbin and spouse, Thomas of Waverly Township, PA; nine grandchildren and seventeen great-grandchildren.
Joe was a 1942 graduate of State College High School. He was a member of the varsity wrestling squad and played trumpet in the State High band and orchestra, as well as, the Lemont band. He was a member of the Centre County Planning Commission and Pennsylvania Farm Bureau. Joe was also a member of the Faith United Church of Christ.
Above all Joe was a farmer's farmer, known well by many throughout the local farming community and the greater Central Pennsylvania region. Joe was loved by many and respected by all. He thrived on hard work. Joe and his father, J.C. Meyer, delivered milk via wagon to local families in the early years until 1947. In 1970, Joe and his brother, Don, opened the Meyer Dairy Store as an extension of the Meyer Farms, which has become a State College hot spot for ice cream, milk, and treats. After the death of his brother Don in 1981, Joe partnered with his son, Dennis. You could find him at the milk register taking care of customers many days and evenings. Joe had a passionate love for Penn State sports including football, wrestling and basketball. One of Joe's greatest joys was to drive his Kubota RTV out to the fields to see how the crops were growing. He loved all of his grandchildren and enjoyed their visits to the farm.
